TermDefinition
Adaptive Trait Any trait or characteristic that helps organisms survive.
Traits Any characteristic an organism has (Ex: blubber layer for warmth, large claws for holding prey).
Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) A claim is a statement you believe is true. Evidence are the facts that prove your claim true. Reasoning is your explanation of how the evidence supports your claim.
Chromosome A long strand of DNA and proteins that are usually found in a cell's nucleus.
Gene A section of a chromosome that codes for one specific trait.
Allele Different versions of a gene (Ex: a gene for curly hair v a gene for straight hair).
Genotype The genetic combination an organism has. There are two genes for every trait, one from mom and one from dad.
Phylogenic Tree A branching diagram that shows evolutionary relationships among organisms.
Amino Acids Monomer of protiens.
TACKLE a graph Title, Axis (indep. variable on X, dep variable on Y), Circle/Connect points, Key (if necessary), Label your axis, Even and Appropriate scale (more that 50% in each direction)
Adaptive Value A trait that helps an organism survive will have adaptive value.
Selective Pressure Organisms with favorable traits survive and pass on these traits, while organisms with less favorable traits die out.
Gel Electrophoresis (DNA Profiling) A method of comparing DNA fragments to determine relationships between organisms or idividuals.
Mitosis The division of a cells nucleus (chromosomes) into two complete and identical nuclei (and chromosomes).
Selecting Agent Anything in the environment that selects who lives and who dies.
Comparative Embryology Comparing the development of embryos for similarities and differences to determine evolutionary relationships
Comparative Anatomy Comparing homologous structures to determine evolutionary relationships
Homologous Structures Structures that have similar forms even if they have a different function.
Vestigial Structures that have no current function but did function in a common ancestor (ex: whale pelvis and femur bones)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
