Science Atomic energy
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Radioactivity | the processes by which an unstable nucleus gives off nuclear radiation. |
| mass number | the sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom |
| isotope | an atom that has the same number of protons (or the same atomic number) as other atoms of the same element do but that has a different number of neutrons( and thus a different atomic number) |
| half-life | the time needed for half of a sample of a radioactive substance to undergo radioactive decay |
| nuclear fussion | the splitting of the nucleus of a large atom into two or more fragments; releases additional neutrons and energy. |
| nuclear chain reaction | a continous series of nuclear fission reactions |
| nuclear fusion | the combination of the nuclei of small atoms to form a larger nucleus; releases energy |
| states of matter | the physical forms of matter, which include solid, liquid and gas |
| Thermal expansion | an increase in the size of a substance in response to an increase in the temperature of the substance |
| insulation | a substance that reduces the transfer of electricity, heat, or sound. |
| Thermal Insulator | a material that reduces or prevents that transfer of heat. |
| Heat | the energy transferred between objects that are different temperatures |
| Thermal conductor | the transfer of energy as heat through a material |
| Thermal Energy | the kinetic energy of a substance's atoms |
