Unit 4 Reproduction
7th Grade Life Science
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| asexual reproduction | A reproductive process that involves only one parent and produces offspring that are identical to the parent. |
| sexual reproduction | type of reproduction in which cells from two parents unite to form the first cell of a new organism |
| mitosis | cell division in which the nucleus divides into nuclei containing the same number of chromosomes |
| meiosis | a type of cell division that results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell, as in the production of gametes and plant spores. |
| interphase | the resting phase between successive mitotic divisions of a cell, or between the first and second divisions of meiosis. |
| cytokinesis | division of the cytoplasm to form two separate daughter cells |
| DNA | deoxyribonucleic acid, a self-replicating material present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information. |
| chromosome | a threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes. |
| cell cycle | series of events in which a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form two daughter cells |
| Homologous chromosomes | Pair of chromosomes that are the same size, same appearance and same genes. |
| Fertilization | Process in sexual reproduction in which male and female reproductive cells join to form a new cell |
| Independent (test) variable | a variable (often denoted by x ) whose variation does not depend on that of another. |
| Dependent (outcome) variable | a variable (often denoted by y ) whose value depends on that of another. |
| Control Group | the group that does not receive the experimental treatment. |
