Micro growth terms
BACT-250
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Sterilization | Destruction of all forms of microbial life, including endospores. autoclave or ethylene oxide gas |
| Commercial Sterilization | Sufficient heat treatment to kil endospores of Clostridium botulinum in canned food. Moreresistant endospores of thermophillic bacteria will survive, but will not germinate and grow under normal stroage conditions |
| Disinfection | Destruction of vegetative pathogens (not endospores) on inanimate objects. Chemical or physical methods |
| Antisepsis | Destruction of vegetative pathogens (not endospores) on living tissue (people). Treatment is almost always chemical antimicrobials. |
| Degerming | Removal of microbes from a limited area, such as the site around an injection in the skin. Mostly a mechanical removal by alcohol soaked swab. |
| Sanitation | treatment intended to lower microbial counts on eating and drinking utensils to safe public health levels. May be done with high-temperature washing or by dipping into a chemical disinfectant (10% bleach) |
| Clean first, then disinfect | the initial load of microbes will determine how long it takes for a surface to be disinfected. |
