| producers | Organisms that produce their own food |
| consumers | Organisms that eat living producers and/or other consumers for food. |
| decomposers | Eat organisms that are already dead or the waste products of the living |
| photosynthesis | process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and high-energy carbohydrates such as sugars and starches |
| chlorophyll | Green pigment in plants that absorbs light energy used to carry out photosynthesis |
| chloroplast | An organelle found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs |
| cellular respiration | Process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen |
| energy | the ability to do work |
| matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
| energy pyramid | A diagram that shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web |
| Law of Conservation of Mass | the law that states that mass cannot be created or destroyed but can be changed from one form to another |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | the law that states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be changed from one form to another |
| fermentation | enable cells to produce ATP without the use of oxygen |
