DNA & Protein Synthe
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | cell organelle that contains the genetic material or DNA |
| Heredity | the passing of traits from parents to offspring |
| Chromosomes | microscopic thread like structures made of DNA |
| DNA | Deoxyribonucleic Acid |
| Gene | a segment of DNA that codes for a specific trait |
| Double Helix | twisted ladder shape of DNA |
| Nitrogen Bases | Guanine, Adenine, Thymine, and Cytosine these parts make up the "rungs" of the DNA ladder |
| Adenine pairs with | Thymine |
| Cytosine pairs with | Guanine |
| Base-Pair Rule | the pairing of only certain bases with one another. Cytosine-Guanine & Adenine- Thymine |
| Nucleotide | made up of a single nitrogen base, a deoxyribose sugar, and a phosphate base |
| mRNA | messenger RNA- delivers the message of what type of protein to make |
| tRNA | transfer RNA-delivers the codon for a specific amino acid |
| rRNA | ribosomal RNA- the location of protein synthesis |
| Synthesis | to make |
| Protein Synthesis | the process that makes proteins |
| Replication | to make an exact copy |
| DNA Replication | the process of creating an exact copy of DNA |
| Codon | three letter segments that code for amino acids |
| Codon Wheel or Chart | a diagram or chart that is used to determine which amino acid the 3 letter combinations are making |
| Mutation | a mistake in the genetic code |
| Transcription | the process of copying a strand of DNA into a strand of mRNA |
| Translation | the process of changing a strand of mRNA into amino acids (using a codon wheel) |
| Uracil | bonds with Adenine in RNA instead of Thymine |
| Compliment | the partner in a pair |
