Cell Lesson 4
Homeostasis & Cell Processes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Homeostasis | The maintenance of a constant internal state in a changing environment. |
| Photosynthesis | When water, carbon dioxide & sunlight produce sugar and oxygen in plants. |
| Chloroplast | Organelle filled with chlorophyll that is involved in photosynthesis. |
| Mitosis | The process of cell division that creates two identical cells with the same DNA. |
| Cellular Respiration | The combination of oxygen and broken down food to produce energy in the cell. The process occurs in the mitochondria |
| Passive Transport | The movement of particles across the cell membrane without the use of energy from the cell. |
| Active Transport | The movement of particles against a concentration gradient that requires the use of a cell's energy. |
| Diffusion | The movement of molecules from a higher concentration to lower concentration. |
| Osmosis | The diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane |
| Endocytosis | The process by which a cell uses energy to surround a particle or particles and enclose the particle(s) in a vesicle to bring the particle(s) into the cell. |
| Exocytosis | When particles are enclosed in a vesicle and released from a cell. |
