Specialised Cells
(GCSE Standard) Functions and adaptations of specialised animal and plant cells
Cell Name | Cell Function | Cell adaptation |
---|---|---|
Red Blood Cell | Carries oxygen around the body | No nucleus and a dimple shape (bio-concave) for larger surface area |
Nerve Cell (Neuron) | Transmit and store information via electrical signals | Many connecting side branches |
White blood Cell | Engulf and destroy harmful bacteria | Cytoplasm can flow |
Ciliated Windpipe Cell | Keep trachea clear of dust | Tiny hairs moving from side to side |
Sperm Cell | Fertilise egg cell | Powerful tail |
Root Hair cell | Absorbs water from soil | Hair like extension to increase surface area |
Phloem Sieve Cell | Transports sugars around the plant | Pores at end and lack of organelles for continuous flow |
Palisade Cell | Performs photosynthesis | Many chloroplasts |
Xylem Vessel Cell | Transport water up from roots to stem | Lignin for structure. Hollow tubes made from dead cells |
Upper Epidermal Cell | Top layer of leaf, prevents water loss | Almost transparent thin, shiny layer of cells |
