| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Controls cell activity |
| Cytoplasm | Jelly-like substance where chemical reactions occur |
| Cell membrane | Semipermeable, allows substances into and out of the cell |
| Mitochondria | Where respiration occurs |
| Ribosomes | Where protein synthesis occurs (protein is made) |
| Cell wall | Strengthens cell |
| Chloroplast | Where photosynthesis occurs |
| Vacuole | Contains cell sap |
| Specialised cell | Cells that carry out a particular function |
| Sperm cell | Function to fertilise egg cell (reproductive cell) |
| Egg (ovum) cell | Function to be fertilised and develop into embryo |
| Nerve cell | Transmits impulses to brain or spinal cord and back to muscles |
| Muscle cell | Allow movement |
| Root hair cell | Allows plants to absorb water |
| Xylem | Non-living tissue in plants that transport water |
| Phloem | Living tissue in pants that carries sugars around the plant |
| Eukaryotic cells | Cells that contain a nucleus which holds DNA |
| Prokaryotic cells | Cells that do not have a nucleus, DNA is found in the cytoplasm |
| Cell differentiation/division | Cells differentiate (change) to form different types of cells |
| Magnification | How much bigger a sample appears to be under the microscope that it is in real life |
| Resolution | Is the ability to distinguish between two points on an image – the amount of detail |
| Electron microscope | Higher magnification and resolution than a light microscope (shows more detail) |
| Light microscope | Magnifies objects up to x2000 magnification and 200nm resolution |
