Cell membrane Semipermeable, allows substances into and out of the cell
Mitochondria Where respiration occurs
Ribosomes Where protein synthesis occurs (protein is made)
Cell wall Strengthens cell
Chloroplast Where photosynthesis occurs
Vacuole Contains cell sap
Specialised cell Cells that carry out a particular function
Sperm cell Function to fertilise egg cell (reproductive cell)
Egg (ovum) cell Function to be fertilised and develop into embryo
Nerve cell Transmits impulses to brain or spinal cord and back to muscles
Muscle cell Allow movement
Root hair cell Allows plants to absorb water
Xylem Non-living tissue in plants that transport water
Phloem Living tissue in pants that carries sugars around the plant
Eukaryotic cells Cells that contain a nucleus which holds DNA
Prokaryotic cells Cells that do not have a nucleus, DNA is found in the cytoplasm
Cell differentiation/division Cells differentiate (change) to form different types of cells
Magnification How much bigger a sample appears to be under the microscope that it is in real life
Resolution Is the ability to distinguish between two points on an image – the amount of detail
Electron microscope Higher magnification and resolution than a light microscope (shows more detail)
Light microscope Magnifies objects up to x2000 magnification and 200nm resolution
