Types of organisms in an ecosystem and matter cycles

autotroph an organism that makes its own food using the light from the sun
producer an organism that makes its own food using the light from the sun (another word for autotroph)
heterotroph an organism that eats other organisms to gain energy
consumer an organism that eats other organisms to gain energy (another word for heterotroph)
decomposer an organism that breaks down waste to gain energy
food chain the order in which food and energy moves from producers to consumers
food web several food chains connected together
primary consumer an organism that eats producers
secondary consumer an organism that eats primary consumers
apex predator an organism at the top of a food chain that eats secondary consumers
energy pyramid a model that shows how energy is lost between each feeding level
carbon cycle the transfer of carbon and oxygen between organisms and the atmosphere
water cycle the circulation of water between the earth's atmosphere and land
nitrogen cycle the movement of nitrogen between the atmosphere, organisms, and the soil
