Intro to Bio- Unit 5
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Cycle | 1. interphase, 2. mitosis, 3. cytokinesis. 4. Meiosis |
| (1) Interphase | A. G1 - cell is actively growing to prepare for next phase B. S Phase - duplicate copy of the chromosome is built and replication enzymes build two identical copies of DNA C. G2 - cell continues growth for next phase and checks DNA for errors |
| (2) Mitosis | Splitting of the single nucleus into two nuclei; the two sister chromatids are the ones that split |
| (3) Cytokinesis | nuclei are separated into two new cells AKA daughter cells |
| (4) Meiosis | occurs in germ cells and is production of gametes (sperm and egg cells) for sexual reproduction; fertilized egg will still undergo mitosis |
| Chromosomes | the "packages" that contain DNA molecules and allow them to move around; In eukaryotic cells the chromosomes exist in the nucleus, in the prokaryotic cells, chromosomes exist in the cytoplasm |
| Homologous chromosomes | not identical and NOT sister chromatids; these chromosomes have the same set of instructions (genes), but different versions of the instructions (alleles) |
| Sister chromatids | identical shapes and colors; they carry the same genes and identical DNA |
