Intro to Bio -Unit 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Biotic | living |
| Abiotic | nonliving; water, glucose, CO2, viruses |
| Biological organization | Atom, cell, population, community, biomes, biosphere |
| Atom | abiotic and creates molecules |
| Cell | biotic, a droplet of water surrounded by molecules that are enclosed by a membrane |
| Prokaryote cell | simple cells that create single-celled organisms; no nucleus |
| Eukaryote cell | complex cells that create multicellular organisms; nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi apparatus |
| Nucleus | stores DNA, which subsequently stores information to make proteins; double layered membrane |
| Mitochondria | converts glucose into useable energy |
| Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) | assembly of proteins and other cellular components |
| Rough ER | assists ribosomes in production of proteins by packing and modifying protein after assemblance |
| Smooth ER | no ribosomes; used to synthesize lipids |
| Golgi apparatus | deliver proteins to different parts of the cell or body |
| Golgi apparatus forms of delivery | vesicles fuse with cell membrane to empty content, lysosomes (only in animals) use digestive enzymes to recycle cellular parts, vacuoles are for storage (no fusion) |
