Organelles
functions of organelles/structures within cells
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | the control center of the cell that regulates all cell activity |
| DNA | Protected by the nucleus. Carries all the instructions to make the cell’s proteins |
| Cell membrane | Controls what enters and leaves the cell |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | Made of membrane sacs and channels that transports, makes, and carries materials within the cell |
| Chloroplast | Transforms energy from the sun into chemical energy (food) to be stored = PHOTOSYNTHESIS |
| Mitochondria | Transforms stored chemical energy (food) into ATP which is usable energy for the cell = CELLULAR RESPIRATION |
| Vacuole | Stores the cell’s water, waste and food |
| Golgi Apparatus | Modifies and packages proteins for distribution outside cell. |
| Lysosome | Move around the cell cleaning up and destroying waste. |
| Ribosomes | Machinery that makes proteins, which are the cells building materials. Located around and on the ER |
| Cell wall | Outer layer of the cell that provides structure, support and protection for the cell. |
| Flagella | a tail-like projection on the outside of cells that allow it to move |
| Pili | hair-like structures around the exterior of prokaryotes that allow it to attach to surfaces |
