B- Unit 6 Lesson 4
Distribution of Traits
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| allele frequency | the frequency with which a gene variant occurs in a given population |
| genotype | the alleles carried in an individual's DNA at a particular gene |
| gene flow | the introduction or removal of certain alleles from the gene pool of a population due to migration of individuals into or out of the population |
| Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium | a state in which the allele frequencies of a population remain unchanged from one generation to the next |
| Hardy-Weinberg equation | the equation shows that, in a given population, if the ratio of the allele and genotype frequencies remains constant, then that population is in equilibrium |
| adaptation | a trait that gives the individual a survival advantage in a certain environment |
| natural selection | a process by which individuals that are better suited to an environment survive better and produce more offspring |
| population | a group of individuals that are the same species |
| mutations | a change in the sequence of DNA |
| homozygous dominant | a genotype consisting of two alleles in which both alleles are the same and dominant |
| homozygous recessive | a genotype consisting of two alleles in which both alleles are the same and recessive |
| heterozygous | a genotype consisting of two alleles in which both alleles are different, one dominant and the other recessive |
