Classification of Living Things

| systematists | people who specialize in taxonomy, taxonomists |
| taxonomy | the branch of science concerned with naming, classifying, and describing the relationships between all living things on Earth |
| binomial nomenclature | a two-part system of naming individual species; using binomial nomenclature, each species is given a unique name which consists of its Genus, followed by it species |
| Domain Bacteria | No nucleus; live just about everywhere; the main function is decomposition |
| Domain Archaea | No nucleus; live in extreme environments; believed to be remnants of species alive during Earth's early years when conditions were much less hospitable than they are today |
| Domain Eukarya | Has nucleus; lives in land and water; includes animals, plants, fungi, protists |
| species | a group of individuals that can reproduce |
| dichotomous key | a tool that allows its user to classify unknown items |
