Classification of Living Things

taxonomy the branch of science concerned with naming, classifying, and describing the relationships between all living things on Earth
binomial nomenclature a two-part system of naming individual species; using binomial nomenclature, each species is given a unique name which consists of its Genus, followed by it species
Domain Bacteria No nucleus; live just about everywhere; the main function is decomposition
Domain Archaea No nucleus; live in extreme environments; believed to be remnants of species alive during Earth's early years when conditions were much less hospitable than they are today
Domain Eukarya Has nucleus; lives in land and water; includes animals, plants, fungi, protists
species a group of individuals that can reproduce
dichotomous key a tool that allows its user to classify unknown items
