Unit 5 Lesson 8
Mitosis and Genetic Information
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| binary fission | a type of asexual reproduction in which a fully grown parent cell separates into two cells |
| genetically identical | when a cell or organism's genetic material is an exact copy of the parent cell |
| interphase | the cell grows and duplicates its DNA to prepare for mitosis |
| mitosis | use for growth, repair, and replacement of worn out cells |
| prophase | chromosomes condense; the protective membrane around the parent cell's nucleus dissolves; mitotic spindle is formed |
| metaphase | the chromosomes line up in the center of the cell |
| anaphase | microtubules pull the chromosomes apart, separating them into identical sister chromatids; then begin to move away from one another to opposite sides of the cell |
| telophase | each pair of sister chromatids finishes moving to opposite sides of the cell; two new nuclei are formed |
| cytokinesis | the cytoplasm divides to make two cells |
