| consumer | an organism that eats other organisms for energy |
| decomposer | an organism that breaks down and gets energy from dead organic matter |
| Food chain | A series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten |
| life cycle | The entire sequence of stages in the life of an organism |
| Hibernation | A period of inactivity that some animals experience in winter that allows them to survive on stored body fat |
| Migration | animals move from one place to another to find warmer weather, better food supplies, or a safe place to give birth to their young |
| Imprinting | the process by which certain animals form strong attachments during an early-life critical period |
| Habitat | Place where an organism lives |
| Niche | An organism's role in an ecosystem, or how it makes its living. |
| Adaptation | A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce |
| camouflage | The hiding of something as a result of its appearance |
