Cell Structure
Biology Grade 10
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Organelles (Ethan D) | Structures that the functions of the cell are performed by. |
| Cytosol (Ethan D) | Clear watery fluid between the cell wall and the nucleus. |
| Cytoplasm (Ethan D) | Thick fluid filled inside the cell wall which has all of the organelles in it. |
| Cell membrane (Ethan D) | Controls what gets into and out of the shell. |
| Nucleus (Ethan D) | Act's like the brain of the cell which controls all of the cells functions. |
| Nuclear membrane (Ethan D) | Controls what gets into and out of the nucleus, and protects the precious chromatin (DNA). |
| Chromatin (DNA) (Ethan D) | Substance which consists of RNA DNA and protein that chromosomes other than bacteria are composed in. |
| Mitochondria (Ethan D) | Creates the energy that cells need to function and live. |
| Endoplasmic reticulum (Ethan D) | Channels that transport proteins made by ribosomes. |
| Ribosomes (Ethan D) | Found outside the ER and make proteins. |
| Vesicles (Ethan D) | Bubbles that act as transport container containers that turn into golgi apparatus |
| Golgi apparatus (Ethan D) | Sort/ package proteins and transport them in the new vesicles around the cell and to other cells through the cell membrane. |
| Lysosomes (Ethan D) | Vesicles that contain digestive enzymes that break things down for reuse/ recycling, and destroys invading microbes. |
| ATP (Ethan D) | Involved in the creation of the cellular respiration energy by being converted by glucose that cells can use. |
| Cell wall (Ethan D) | Surrounds the cell membrane and gives strength and protection to cells. |
| Chloroplast (Ethan D) | Carry's out photosynthesis. (The process of converting light energy to energy stored in the plant that is used as food) |
| Chlorophyll (Ethan D) | Absorbs light to provide energy for photosynthesis. |
| Large vacuoles (Ethan D) | Pushes the contents of the cell toward the cell membrane to allow the plant to take in more light energy for photosynthesis. |
