Cell Organelles
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | Control center of the cell; contains the DNA and nucleolus; the nucleolus makes ribosomes |
| Cell Membrane | A semi-permeable phospholipid bilayer that allows some materials to enter and exit the cell, but not all materials |
| Cell Wall | A rigid structure found outside the cell membrane that gives plant cells their shape |
| Ribosome | The site of protein synthesis; ribosomes read the genetic instructions from mRNA and converts them into proteins |
| Cytoskeleton | Fillaments running through the cytoplasm of animal cells that provide the cell with structural support |
| Mitochondria | "The Powerhouse of the Cell"; the site of cellular respiration; converts oxygen and glucose into carbon dioxide and ATP |
| Chloroplast | Site of photosynthesis; converts sunlight, carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen |
| Lysosome | A cellular vessivle that engulfs and digests debris and old or defective organelles |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | Makes lipids |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Makes proteins |
| Vacuole | Stores water and nutrients needed for cellular processes |
| Golgi Apparatus | Packages and ships lipids and proteins |
| Centriole | Creates the spindle fibers used in cell division |
| Cillia/Flagellum | hair-like projections that provide cells with the ability to move and increase the surface area of cells for absorption |
