| Electrolytes | Dissociate into ions in water |
| Hyernatremia | Sodium excess |
| Hyponatremia | Sodium depletion |
| Dehydration | Fluid loss, either the loss of water or the loss of water and solutes together |
| Edema | An atypical accumulation of the fluid in the interstitial space |
| Aldosterone | Regulates sodium ion concentrations in the extracellular fluid |
| Respiratory alkalosis | Increased respiration elevates the blood pH beyond the normal range. Possibly caused by asthma, pneumonia, or a severe panic attack |
| Respiratory acidosis | when the lungs can't remove enough of the carbon dioxide. Possibly occurring with emphysema, extreme obesity, or narcotic overdose |
