spyware | software that enables a user to obtain covert information about another's computer activities by transmitting data covertly from their hard drive |
dumpster diving | thieves root through your trash because they know the documents you discard as garbage contain personal identity information |
firewall | a part of a computer system or network which is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting outward communication |
forgery | the action of forging or producing a copy of a document, signature, banknote, or work of art |
fraud | wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain |
identity theft | the fraudulent acquisition and use of a person's private identifying information, usually for financial gain |
peer-to-peer | computer network refers to any network that does not have fixed clients and servers, but a number of autonomous peer nodes that function as both clients and servers to the other nodes on the network |
phishing | Tricking consumers into disclosing their personal and financial data, such as secret access data or credit card or bank account numbers |
shoulder surfing | where thieves steal your personal data by spying over your shoulder as you use a laptop, ATM, public kiosk or other electronic device in public |
snail mail | the ordinary postal system as opposed to email |
scams | a dishonest scheme; a fraud |
anti virus software | software used to prevent, scan, detect and delete viruses from a computer |
better business bureau | helps people find business, brands, and charities they can trust |
federal trade commission | dministers antitrust and consumer protection legislation in pursuit of free and fair competition in the marketplace |
equifax | a credit bureau that track credit history |
transunion | american consumer credit reporting agency |
experian | credit reporting website |
internal revenue service | The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is a U.S. government agency responsible for the collection of taxes and enforcement of tax laws |
solicitations | the act of asking for or trying to obtain something from someone |
spam | irrelevant or inappropriate messages sent on the internet to a large number of recipients |
