Bio Ch 8 DNA-Protein

Gullett-Ch8-Bio-DNA

TermDefinition
nucleotide the building block of DNA, make of a sugar, a phosphate, and a nitrogen base.
double helix the spiral-staircase structure of the DNA molecule
base pair rules rules that state in DNA the bases pair up with A pairing with T and C pairing with G. (A-T, C-G)
replication process by which DNA is copied
DNA polymerase an enzyme that builds the DNA molecule during replication
central dogma theory that states that, in cells, information only flows from DNA to RNA to proteins
RNA a chemical cousin of DNA that is made from the DNA template to help make proteins
transcription the process of making RNA from a DNA template
RNA ploymerase an enzyme that builds the RNA molecule during transcription
mRNA messenger RNA that carries instructions for making proteins from the nucleus to the ribosomes
rRNA ribosomal RNA - makes up ribosomes
tRNA transfer RNA - transfers amino acids to the ribosomes and matches them to the mRNA to build a protein
translation the process that attaches amino acids together in the ribosome to create protein chains using an mRNA template
codon in DNA and mRNA, a three-letter nucleotide sequence that codes for a specific amino acids
stop codon codon that signals the ribosome to stop translation
start codon codon that signals the ribosome to being translation

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
