| Branch | Individual divisions of sponge body |
| Ectoderm | Outer layer of sponge; acts like epidermis; protects and supports |
| Pinacocyte | Plate-like cells that make up the ectoderm of the sponge |
| Endoderm | Inner layer of sponge body; lines the spongocoel |
| Choanocytes | Collared cells with flagellum; move water to help to obtain nutrients; function in reproduction |
| Mesohyl | Jelly-like matrix found between the endoderm and ectoderm; made by collenocytes |
| Spicule | Needle-like structures that provide skeletal support of sponge; made of calcium carbonate, spongin or silicon |
| Ostia | Pores on the surface of sponge body; bring water into the central cavity |
| Holdfast | Holds sponge to substrate surface |
| Spongocoel | Central cavity of the sponge |
| Osculum | Opening at the top of the sponge; water exits through the osculum |
| Porocyte | Cells that make up the ostia; may open or close the pore |
| Amoebocyte | Cell in mesohyl; responsible for engulfing and digesting food particles |
