Function of Body Systems

Skeletal System Function Provides structure and support, allows for movement, protects vital organs, creates blood cells
Muscular System Function Provides movement and allows for reaction to environmental conditions
Circulatory System Function (aka Cardivascular) Transports needed materials (oxygen, glucose, waste products, disease fighting cells) to and from body cells
Respiratory System Function Moves oxygen into the body into the body and removes carbon dioxide and excess water from the body
Digestive System Function Breaks down food into usable molecules, provides a location for glucose molecule absorption, and rids the body of solid waste ; provides nutrients to the cells
Excretory System Function Collects and rids the body of cellular waste in liquid form
Nervous System Function Receive environmental information and directs a response if necessary; helps maintain homeostasis by detecting stimuli using nerve cells called neurons; control center for the body
Immune System Function (aka Lymphatic) Eliminate pathogens that attack body cells; protect the body from harmful materials
Endocrine System Function Regulate homeostasis through release of hormones from glands
Integumentary System Function Protection for the body, temperature regulation, and prevents the body from drying out
Reproductive System Function Specialized organs for continuation pf a species
