AP Biology Unit 5 Vocabulary- Silim
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chromosomes | Carries genetic information in genes |
| Daughter Cell | Product of meiosis or mitosis |
| Diploid (2n) | Two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent |
| Gamete | Sex cell, haploid cell |
| Haploid (1n) | Single set of unpaired chromosomes, one set of chromosomes |
| Meiosis | Process in how gamete cells reproduce |
| Chromatid | Each of the single strands that make a chromosome |
| Crossing Over | When non sister chromatids exchange genes |
| Fertilization | Combining a male gamete cell and female gamete cell, making a zygote |
| Homologous Chromosomes | Chromosomes in diploid cell that carry the same genes, ex. chromosome 21 |
| Sexual Reproduction | Zygotes or new organism made through the fusion of a male gamete with a female gamete |
| Allele | two or more forms of a gene, like an allele that gives a pink or purple color |
| Conserved | A gene that stayed unchanged |
| Genotype | Genetic makeup of a cell, BB x bb |
| Law of Independent Assortment | How different genes independently separate from each other, ex. pea color and pea shape are independently given, not given together |
| Law of Segregation | Two of the same alleles coding for the same information separate during meiosis |
| Phenotype | The outside characteristics(color of hair or how tall a person is) |
| Trait | Determined by genes and environment, specific characteristic |
| Zygote | Diploid cell resulted from two haploid cells. When the sperm and egg meet and the result |
| Genetic Linkage | DNA sequences close together will be inherited with each other |
| Sex-Linked Trait | Linked to a sex chromsome, like x or y chromsome |
| Nondisjunction | Failure of chromosome to separate during meiosis I or meiosis II |
