AP Biology Unit 4 Vocabulary-Lara
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Target Cell | cells that are receptive to a secreted hormone. |
| Ligand | an ion or molecule attached to a metal atom by coordinate bonding |
| Phosphorylation | A biochemical process that involves the addition of phosphate to an organic compound. |
| Receptor protein | chemical structures, composed of protein, that receive and transduce signals that may be integrated into biological systems. |
| Secondary Messenger | e intracellular signaling molecules released by the cell in response to exposure to extracellular signaling molecules |
| Signal Amplification | an increase in the intensity of a signal through networks of intracellular reactions |
| Signal Transduction | he transmission of molecular signals from a cell's exterior to its interior |
| Response | a change in the organism resulting from the detection of a stimulus. |
| Feedback | it is the control of a biological reaction by the end products of that reaction. |
| Negative Feedback | a response that is the reverse of the change detected |
| Positive Feedback | the enhancement or amplification of an effect by its own influence on the process that gives rise to it. |
| Asexual Reproduction | a type of reproduction that does not involve the fusion of gametes or change in the number of chromosomes. |
| Cell Cycle | series of events that take place in a cell that cause it to divide into two daughter cells. |
| Interphase | the resting phase between successive mitotic divisions of a cell, or between the first and second divisions of meiosis. |
| Mitosis | a part of the cell cycle in which replicated chromosomes are separated into two new nuclei |
| Cancer | abnormal growth of cells which tend to proliferate in an uncontrolled way and, in some cases, to metastasize (spread) |
| Cyclin | a family of proteins that controls the progression of a cell through the cell cycle by activating cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) enzymes or group of enzymes required for synthesis of cell cycle. |
