Meiosis Vocabulary words

TermDefinition
Asexual Reproduction a process by which a single parent reproduces by itself to produce a clone identical to parent
Sexual Reproduction a process by which two cells from different parents (gamete – egg and sperm) unite to produce genetically different offspring.
Haploid cell that contains only a single set of chromosomes.
Diploid cell that contains both sets of homologous chromosomes
Gamete sex cells (sperm or egg)
Meiosis special type of cell division that occurs in the reproductive structures of sexually reproducing individuals and reduces the number of chromosomes
Homologous Chromosomes chromosomes that each have a corresponding chromosome from the opposite-sex parent.
Fertilization a process in sexual reproduction when the haploid sperm fuses with a haploid egg to form a diploid zygote
Synapsis homologous chromosomes become physically bound together during meiosis.
Crossing Over chromosomes exchange genetic information between each other
Independent Assortment chromosomes line up independently of one another on the metaphase plate during the formation of gametes
