Meiosis Vocabulary words

| Asexual Reproduction | a process by which a single parent reproduces by itself to produce a clone identical to parent |
| Sexual Reproduction | a process by which two cells from different parents (gamete – egg and sperm) unite to produce genetically different offspring. |
| Haploid | cell that contains only a single set of chromosomes. |
| Diploid | cell that contains both sets of homologous chromosomes |
| Gamete | sex cells (sperm or egg) |
| Meiosis | special type of cell division that occurs in the reproductive structures of sexually reproducing individuals and reduces the number of chromosomes |
| Homologous Chromosomes | chromosomes that each have a corresponding chromosome from the opposite-sex parent. |
| Fertilization | a process in sexual reproduction when the haploid sperm fuses with a haploid egg to form a diploid zygote |
| Synapsis | homologous chromosomes become physically bound together during meiosis. |
| Crossing Over | chromosomes exchange genetic information between each other |
| Independent Assortment | chromosomes line up independently of one another on the metaphase plate during the formation of gametes |
