3.4 Diffusion and Osmosis
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| biology | the study of living things |
| osmosis | the movement of water across a semipermeable membrane |
| permeable | allows all substances to pass through |
| impermeable | does not allow any substance to pass through |
| semipermeable | allows some substances to pass through |
| diffusion | movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration |
| active | the type of transport that uses energy |
| passive | the type of transport that does not use energy |
| concentration gradient | the difference in concentration of a substance from one area to another |
| hypertonic | the more concentrated solution or less diluted or less water |
| hypotonic | the less concentrated solution or more diluted or more water |
| isotonic | two solutions with the same concentration |
| solute | the solid part of a solution |
| solvent | the liquid part of a solution |
| homogeneous | having the same concentration through out |
| heterogeneous | does not have the same concentration throughout |
| equilibrium | the state in which the concentration is the same and there is no diffusion |
| facilitated diffusion | the diffusion of molecules across a membrane through transport proteins |
