Virus and Bacteria

virus A non-cellular infectious agent that has two characteristics
bacteria A single-celled organism with simple structure and lacking a nucleus.
fungi A eukaryotic organism that has cell walls, uses spores to reproduce, and is a heterotroph that feeds by absorbing its food.
algae (singular, alga) - a plant-like (photosynthetic) member of the protest group; can be single-celled or consist of clustered or multiple cells
protist A eukaryotic organism that cannot be classified as an animal, plant, or fungus.
parasite An organism that feeds on a living host
host An organism on which a parasite lives.
unicellular Made of a single cell
infection Contamination or invasion of body tissue by pathogenic organisms
vector An animal that transmits disease. For example a mosquito is a vector for malaria.
disease An abnormal state in which the body is not functioning normally
antibiotic A chemical that kills bacteria or slows their growth without harming body cells.
vaccine A weakened or inactive version of a pathogen that stimulates the body's production of antibodies which can aid in destroying the pathogen
microbe Microscopic life form; microorganism; germ
pathogen A disease causing organism
prevention Practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury
microbiology the study of microorganisms
