| Trait | a characteristic of an organism |
| Heredity | the passing of genes from one generation to the next |
| Inherited Trait | a trait that a parent passes to its offspring |
| Behavior | the way an organism acts in response to its environment |
| Learned Behavior | a behavior that animal offspring learn by observing their parents or other animals |
| Instinctive Behavior | a behavior that an animal is born with-it does not have to be taught to have it |
| Adaptation | any characteristic that helps an animal stay alive in its environment |
| Structural Adaptations | a body part or coloring that aids survival |
| Functional Adaptations | jobs of body parts controlling life processes that aids survival |
| Behavioral Adaptations | an action that aids survival |
| Camouflage | an adaptation that makes it possible for an animal to blend in with its environment |
| Mimicry | When a living organism mimics or copies another so it can survive |
