Evolution Part 2 Vocabulary Practice

Fossil the preserved remains or traces of living things
sedimentary rock the rock in which most fossils are found
extinct a type of organism that no longer exists on Earth
evolution the process by which all the different kinds of living things have changed over long periods of time to adapt to their environment
Law of Superposition Each rock layer is older than the layer above it
Relative Age the age of an object or event compared to other layers
Absolute Age The actual age (numeric) of rock or fossil
Intrusion interruption of rock due to plate tectonic movement.
Fossil record The set of all fossils together that can be used to tell the history of the earth.
Homologous structures Similar structures that evolved from a common ancestor.
DNA evidence Can show how related species are by how much they have in common.
common ancestor A population of individuals form which the organism of interest descended with modification.
