| mutation | an alteration in the nucleotide sequence of the genome of an organism, virus, or extrachromosomal DNA. |
| gene expression | the process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product that enable to produce protein as the end product. |
| variation | the difference in DNA among individuals or the differences between populations. |
| amino acids | small molecules that are the building blocks of proteins. |
| addition (mutation) | a mutation that results from insertion or deletion of a single nucleotide into, or from, the normal DNA sequence |
| deletion (mutation) | a type of mutation involving the loss of genetic material. It can be small, involving a single missing DNA base pair, or large, involving a piece of a chromosome. |
| inversion (mutation) | a chromosome rearrangement in which a segment of a chromosome is reversed end to end. |
| substitution (mutation) | a type of mutation where one base pair is replaced by a different base pair. |
