| adaptation | physical or behavioral trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce |
| environmental factor (pressure) | things that organisms struggle against or compete for to survive - climate, food, water, living space, predators, disease, mates |
| natural selection | process by which the most well adapted organisms pass on their genes more frequently, leading to increase in number of organism with similar traits |
| evolution | change in inherited traits in a species over time |
| trait | any physical or behavioral characteristic of an organism |
| generation | all of the offspring born in the same time period (year, season, etc) |
| population | group of organisms of the same species living in the same region |
| probability | chance of an event occurring |
| species | group of similar organisms that can reproduce |
| fitness | Ability for an organism to survive and reproduce, due to adaptations to ecosystem |
| artificial selection (selective breeding) | Process where humans choose plants or animals to reproduce in order to produce offspring with desired traits |
