| Organic matter | matter made of carbon of plant or animal origin |
| Fehling solution | reagent used to identify certain sugars called reducing sugars such as glucose and maltose |
| In vitro | any experiment that is performed outside the body in a test tube |
| In vivo | any experiment that is performed inside the body |
| Hydrolysis | decomposition of complex molecules into simpler ones in the presence of water |
| Enzyme | a chemical substance produced by the body that facilitates the simplification of a complex molecule |
| Molecule | a group of atoms bonded together |
| Albumin | protein of the egg white that coagulates when heated |
| pH | the measure of the concentration of H+ ions of a solution |
| Pepsin | digestive enzyme secreted by the stomach |
| Trypsin | digestive enzyme secreted by the pancreas |
| Biocatalyst | catalyst produced by the living organism |
| Substrate | substance upon which an enzyme acts |
