Abortion Termination of a pregnancy before the fetus is viable
Abruptio placenta Premature separation of a normally implanted placenta
Amniocentesis Withdrawal of some fluid surrounding the fetus by inserting a sterile needle through the abdominal and uterine wall into amniotic sac
Cerclage Encircling an incompetent cervix with a ring or loop of suture
Coomb’s Test INDIRECT Determination of Rh positive antibodies in the maternal blood
Coomb’s Test DIRECT Determination of the maternal Rh positive antibodies in fetal cord blood
Estriol Major metabolite of estrogen; found in lrg quantities in maternal urine (last 1/2 pregnancy)
Lecithin and Sphingomycin Predominate phospholipid making up surfactant. (L/S= maturity fetal lungs)
Macrosomia Unusually lrg body.
Placenta Previa A placenta that is implanted in the lower uterine segment so that it partially covers the internal os del cervix
Surfactant Complex detergent-like substance lining the alveoli del lungs. It reduces the surface tension in the alveoli and keeps the alveolar walls from collapsing inward
Toxemia Also known as Gestational Hypertension. Formally believed it was toxic in blood. Complication develops after 20 wks w/ proteinuria in a women with oral BP before preg
