| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Enzyme | A protein that acts as a biological catalyst to speed up specific biochemical reactions. |
| Biochemical Reaction | The changing of one molecule into a different molecule, inside a cell. |
| Catalyst | A substance that starts or speeds up a chemical reaction. |
| Activation Energy | The energy needed to activate (or start) a chemical reaction. |
| Product | The molecule that was changed by a biochemical reaction. |
| Reactant | The molecule at the start of the reaction that will be changed by the enzyme. Most reactants are substrates. |
| Active Site | The specific part of an enzyme that binds to a substrate. |
| Substrate | The molecule acted on by an enzyme. |
| pH | A measure of how acidic or basic a substance is. |
| Denatured | The three-dimensional (3D) structure of the protein is disrupted due to exposure to chemical or physical factors. |
