Vocabulary and Concept Review for Forensics
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Blood Typing | the process of testing a person’s blood to determine the person’s blood group |
| Ouchterlony Test | method used for species determination when analyzing blood, this test works on the principle of diffusion of antigens and antibodies through agar gel |
| Forensic Serology | the detection, classification, and study of various body fluids and their relationship to the crime scene; body fluids can include blood, semen, fecal matter, sweat, etc |
| Erythrocyte | red blood cell |
| Saliva | the fluid that moistens the mouth |
| ABA Card | these are commercially produced HemaTrace strips that change color in the presence of human blood |
| Brentamine Spot Test | presumptive test for seminal fluid |
| Locus | the physical location of a gene on a chromosome |
| Agglutination | the clumping together of red blood cells through the action of an antibody |
| PSA Test | (prostate-specific antigen test) also called p30 in forensics, this test confirms the presence of seminal fluid |
| Heterozygous | having two different allelic genes on two corresponding positions on a pair of chromosomes |
| Excreted Fluid | fluid that has been discharged from the body as waste matter |
| Genotype | the particular combination of genes found in the cells of individuals |
| Antigen | a substance, usually a protein, that stimulates the body to produce antigens against it |
| Homozygous | having two identical allelic genes on two corresponding positions of a pair of chromosomes |
| Secreted Fluid | fluid that has been generated and separated from cells or other bodily fluids; to produce and release a liquid |
| Antibody | a protein that destroys or inactivates a specific antigen, found in the blood serum |
| Forensic Serologist | scientists who examine the physical evidence with the intent of finding, identifying, and individualizing strains of biological origin |
| Allele | any of several alternative forms of a gene located at the same point on a particular pair of chromosomes; the genes that determine blood type are alleles |
| Serum | the yellowish liquid that separates out of blood once a clot is formed or when the blood is spun in the centrifuge |
| Acid Phosphatase | an enzyme found in high concentration in semen |
