|---|---|
| ATP | the main energy molecule for living things. |
| ADP | the low energy molecule that can be converted to ATP |
| chemosynthesis | the process that makes ATP by using chemicals and an energy source other than light |
| photosynthesis | the process by which organisms use sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to produce carbohydrates and oxygen. |
| Chlorophyll | a green pigment that is present in cells that absorbs light to provide energy for photosynthesis |
| light-dependent reactions | part of photosynthesis that absorbs energy from sunlight to make energy molecules that are used in the light-independent reactions. |
| light-independent reactions | part of photosynthesis that uses energy molecules made in the light-dependent reactions to build carbohydrates |
| cellular respiration | the process that produces energy from carbohydrates, oxygen to produce water and carbon dioxide and lots of ATP for all living cells |
| aerobic | describes a process that requires oxygen to happen |
| glycolysis | the anaerobic breakdown of glucose into pyruvic acid and a small amount of ATP |
| anaerobic | describes a process that does not require oxygen |
| Krebs cycle | a series of chemical reactions that turn pyruvate into carbon dioxide and water and allows the creation of a lot of ATP |
| fermentation | the breakdown of carbohydrates in a the absence of oxygen |
| lactic acid fermentation | the fermentation that occurs in some organisms that results in the formation of lactic acid |
| alcohol fermentation | the fermentation that occurs in some organisms that results in the formation of different types of alcohol |
