karyotype A picture of all the chromosomes in a cell arranged in pairs.
egg An ovum also called an egg cell.
DNA Deoxyribonucleic acid: An extremely long macro molecule that is the main component of chromosomes.
heterozygous Having dissimilar pairs of genes for any hereditary characteristic.
sex-liked genes A gene that is carried by the X or Y chromosome.
Sperm A male reproductive cell.
meiosis Part of the process of gamete formation. 2 cell divisions.
pedigree A chart or "family tree" that tracks which members of a family have a particular trait.
codominance Pertaining to 2 different alleles tat are fully expressed in a heterozygous individual.
homozygous Having identical pairs of genes for any given pair for hereditary characteristics.
Genetic disorder An abnormal condition that a person inherits through genes or chromosomes.
mitosis Cell division of nucleus and the cytoplasm.
multiple alleles Tree or more forms of a gene.
genotype The genetic makeup of an organism with reference to a single trait.
phenotype An organisms physical appearance, or visible. traits.
alleles The different forms of a gene.
purebred An animal that's ancestors have come form a recognized breed.
heredity Passing, or capable of passing, naturally from parent to offspring through genes. Ex:Blue eyes.
carrier An individual processing on unexpressed, recessive trait.
trait a characteristic or quality.
chromosome Strand of DNA that has the hereditary information necessary for cell life.
genetics The science of heredity.
punnet square A chart the shows all the possible combos of alleles that can result from a genetic cross.
mutation A sudden departure from the parent type in 1 or more heritable characteristics caused by a change in a gene or chromosome.
hybrid The offspring of 2 animals or plants of different breeds, varieties, species, etc
probability The likelihood that an event will occur.
dominant allele An allele whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present.
genes Characteristic passed down through ancestors, parents, grandparents, etc.
recessive allele An allele that is masked or hidden when a dominant allele is present.
