Dental Embryology Terminology
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Apoptosis | Programmed cell death, fragmentation of a cell into membrane bound particles, eliminated by phagocytosis by specialized cells, accompanies embryonic growth & differentiation |
Tissues from Endoderm | Internal layer: the epithelial lining the inside of the digestive tube except part of the mouth and pharynx; forms digestive tract (liver and pancreas) and alveolar (lung) cells |
Tissues from Ectoderm | Outer layer: forms CNS (neural tube, brain, & spinal cord), tooth enamel, lens of the eye, neural tube (becomes brain & spinal cord), epidermis of hair & nails, the sensory epithelium (of eye, ear, nose), and epithelium of oral & nasal |
Tissues from Mesoderm | Middle layer: forms cardiac, skeletal and smooth muscle, bone, cartilage, lymph cells, blood, dentin, pulp, cementum, and periodontal ligament |
Trilaminar Disk | Formed by the process of gastrulation where the bilaminar disk becomes the trilaminar disk (cells will flow in over the primitive streak); embryo that consists of 3 germ layers: ectoderm (outer), mesoderm (inner), endoderm (internal) |
