Notes I use Greek letters for soft BGDKPT consonants (βγδχφτ). Unicode does not define under/overscores with Latin consonants. The sounds of many of these letters are close (in modern Greek), but listen to the teacher for proper pronunciation.
ܐ ʾĀleφ ['’' (note the transliteration is a right-hand single quote) light glottal stop like the 'tt' in Cockney 'battle']
ܒ Bēθ [Hard: 'b'; soft (before vowel): (β) 'v']
ܓ Gāmal [Hard: 'g'; soft (before vowel): (γ) tongue at the back of your throat, not quite touching your pallet--listen to the video: #4.10] #4.10]
ܕ Dālaθ [Hard: 'd'; soft (before vowel): (δ) 'th' as in 'thus' ]
ܗ Hē ['h']
ܘ Waw [as consonant: 'w'; as vowel: either 'ū' (flute) or 'ō' (hope)]
ܙ Zayn ['z']
ܚ Ḥēθ [(ḥ) like 'ch' in Scottish 'loch.' Not a sound you hear in English much.Listen to the video: #6.8]
ܛ Ṭēθ ['ṭ' a 't' of some variety, sometimes indistinguishable from (hard) Taw. Francois argues for a slight pause with the 't'--listen to the video: #6.20]
ܝ Yōδ ['y'; as in English can be either a vowel or a consonant] ܣܝ with some preceding characters, depending on font
ܟ Kāφ [Hard: 'k'; soft (before vowel): (χ) 'ch' in Scottish 'loch.'] ܟܝwith following character
ܠ Lāmaδ ['l']
ܡ Mīm ['m']
ܢ Nūn ['n'] ܢܝ with following character; ܝܢ with some preceding characters
ܣ Semkaθ ['s']
ܥ ʿĒ ['‘' (note the transliteration is a left-hand single quote) Most folks pronounce this just like āleφ, but the proper pronunciation is as in Arabic:
ܦ Pē [Hard: 'p'; soft (before vowel): (φ) 'f']
ܨ Ṣāδē ['ṣ' properly this is probably a dental s, as Francois points out, but native speakers do sometimes pronounce it as 'ts' like modern Hebrew צ]
ܩ Qōφ ['q' (no following 'u' required)]
ܪ Rēš [rolled 'r']
ܫ Šīn ['š' = sh]
ܬ Taw [Hard: 't'; soft (before vowel): (θ) 'th' as in 'thing']
