|---|---|
| DNA | deoxyribonucleic acid - genetic information in the nucleus of cells |
| gene | a section of a chromosome that codes for a trait |
| chromosome | threadlike bodies that carry genetic information in the form of genes |
| trait | characteristic of an organism (such as eye color) |
| mutation | a change in a gene or chromosome |
| genetic disorder | a disease caused by a change in the DNA sequence |
| allele | different forms (variations) of a gene |
| genotype | the combination of genes for one specific trait |
| phenotype | trait displayed from a gene - the physical appearance |
| dominant trait | the expressed allele - the trait you can see |
| recessive trait | the expressed allele when no dominant allele is present |
| homozygous | a pair of two identical alleles |
| heterozygous | two different alleles |
| sexual reproduction | two parent cells join to form a new, unique individual |
| asexual reproduction | production of genetically identical offspring by a single parent |
| genetic variation/genetic diversity | the difference in DNA among individuals and/or populations of the same species |
| Punnett Square | diagram used to identify genotypes and phenotypes of offspring |
| gametes | sex cells |
| mitosis | cell division where DNA is replicated (2 daughter cells) |
| genetics | the study of genes and heredity |
| meiosis | cell division where gametes are produced (4 daughter cells) |
