|---|---|
| chemical reaction | a process that changes or transforms one set of compounds into another |
| reactants | the substances (elements or compounds) that engage in a chemical reaction and are rearranged |
| products | the result of a chemical reaction after substances (elements or compounds) have been rearranged. |
| catalyst | a substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction |
| enzyme | a protein catalyst that speeds up the rate of specific biological reactions |
| substrate | the substance that binds (joins) to the enzyme; the reactant of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction |
| enzyme-substrate complex | the combination of an enzyme joined to a substrate |
| activation energy | the minimum amount of energy required in order for a chemical reaction to occur |
| lactase | an enzyme that breaks down lactose |
| active site | the location where the substrate binds to the enzyme |
