Lesson 2.4 Chemical Reactions and Enzymes

chemical reaction a process that changes or transforms one set of compounds into another
reactants the substances (elements or compounds) that engage in a chemical reaction and are rearranged
products the result of a chemical reaction after substances (elements or compounds) have been rearranged.
catalyst a substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction
enzyme a protein catalyst that speeds up the rate of specific biological reactions
substrate the substance that binds (joins) to the enzyme; the reactant of an enzyme-catalyzed reaction
enzyme-substrate complex the combination of an enzyme joined to a substrate
activation energy the minimum amount of energy required in order for a chemical reaction to occur
lactase an enzyme that breaks down lactose
active site the location where the substrate binds to the enzyme
