Evolution
Evolution and Natural Selection Vocab Practice
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Generation | a group of organisms living around the same time |
| Evolution | the change in the characteristics of a species over several generations and relies on the process of natural selection |
| Diversity | having different characteristics or traits than organisms in an environment |
| Homologous structure | the traits of organisms that result from sharing a common ancestor |
| Analogous structure | traits that did not come from a common ancestor but changed through natural selection |
| Common ancestor | common relative of many species (changed through evolution) |
| Species | classification comprising related organisms that share common characteristics |
| Convergent evolution | a trait of evolution in which species not of similar recent origin acquire similar properties due to natural selection |
| Vestigial structure | genetically determined structures or attributes that have apparently lost most or all of their ancestral function in a given species |
| genetic variation | Differences among individuals in the composition of their genes or other DNA segments |
| adaptation | A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce |
| genotype | genetic makeup of an organism |
| phenotype | An organism's physical appearance, or visible traits. |
| natural selection | A process in which individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than other individuals because of those traits. |
| biological fitness | a measure of the ability to survive and reproduce relative to other members of the population |
| offspring | a new organism produced by one or more parents |
| inherited | A characteristic that is passed from parent to offspring. |
| genetic mutation | a change of the sequence of a DNA molecule |
