Evolution and Natural Selection Vocab Practice

TermDefinition
Generation a group of organisms living around the same time
Evolution the change in the characteristics of a species over several generations and relies on the process of natural selection
Diversity having different characteristics or traits than organisms in an environment
Homologous structure the traits of organisms that result from sharing a common ancestor
Analogous structure traits that did not come from a common ancestor but changed through natural selection
Common ancestor common relative of many species (changed through evolution)
Species classification comprising related organisms that share common characteristics
Convergent evolution a trait of evolution in which species not of similar recent origin acquire similar properties due to natural selection
Vestigial structure genetically determined structures or attributes that have apparently lost most or all of their ancestral function in a given species
genetic variation Differences among individuals in the composition of their genes or other DNA segments
adaptation A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce
genotype genetic makeup of an organism
phenotype An organism's physical appearance, or visible traits.
natural selection A process in which individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than other individuals because of those traits.
biological fitness a measure of the ability to survive and reproduce relative to other members of the population
offspring a new organism produced by one or more parents
inherited A characteristic that is passed from parent to offspring.
genetic mutation a change of the sequence of a DNA molecule
