Ecology 1

TermDefinition
ecology the branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings.
optimal range The range of a condition in which a species are most comfortable and thrives
zone of stress The range of values of an abiotic factor that an organism can survive but are not favorable
limiting factor Elements that prevent a population from attaining its biotic potential.
carrying capacity The maximum number of individuals of a population that can be sustained by a particular habitat.
biotic factor The living parts of an ecosystem.
abiotic factor factors are the non-living parts of an organism's habitat.
ecosystem The interrelationships between the organisms in a community and their physical environment.
population A group of individuals of the same species living in the same area.
organism one living thing of a specific species
community A group of populations living in the same area.
zone of intolerance zone where organisms cannot survive
biosphere It includes all the regions of the earth that contain living things.
habitat The type of place where it usually lives. It includes the other organisms that live there as well as the physical and chemical characteristics of the environment.
