Photosynthesis and Ceullular Respiration Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Photosynthesis synthesis of compounds with the aid of radiant energy (especially in plants)
autotroph plant capable of synthesizing its own food from simple organic substances
heterotroph an organism that depends on complex organic substances for nutrition
cellular respiration the metabolic processes whereby certain organisms obtain energy from organic molecules
Chlorophyll any of a group of green pigments found in photosynthetic organisms
Thylakoid flattened sacs inside a chloroplast on which the light reactions of photosynthesis take place
electron transport chain the most important stage of cellular respiration because it produces the most ATP
carbon fixation the process by which inorganic carbon is converted to organic compounds by living organisms
calvin cycle the light-independent reactions in photosynthesis that turn carbon dioxide into sugar
aerobic depending on free oxygen or air
anaerobic living or active in the absence of free oxygen
glycolysis a metabolic process that breaks down carbohydrates and and release energy for the body in the form of ATP
Kreb’s Cycle the second stage of cellular respiration; also known as the citric acid cycle
fermentation the anaerobic breakdown of sugar into alcohol or acid
stroma the dense colorless framework of a chloroplast
stomata small pores that allow for gas exchange for carbon dioxide and Oxygen in plants
ADP this is what an ATP molecule becomes after it has used one of its phosphate groups for energy
ATP an organic compound and hydrotrope that provides energy to drive many processes in living cells
ATP synthase an enzyme found in the mitochondria that creates ATP
grana a stack of thylakoids found within the chloroplasts
lactic acid fermentation an anaerobic metabolic process by which glucose is converted into cellular energy

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
