| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Atoms | smallest most basic unit of matter |
| Nucleus | Usually at the center of an atom. Contains protons and neutrons. |
| Neutrons | No electrical charge. Neutral charge. |
| Protons | Positively charged |
| Electrons | Negatively charged. Mostly same number as protons. |
| Rings | Atoms contain energy rings outside of the nucleus. First ring holds 2 electrons, second and third hold 8 electrons, fourth holds 16 electrons. |
| Element | A specific type of atom. Cannot break down into smaller substances. |
| Valence | How many electrons you need to fill the last ring. |
| Compound | Formed when two or more different atoms bond together. |
| Atomic Number | Refers to the number of protons in the nucleus(in its natural state) |
| Atomic Mass | Refers to the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus(roughly double the number of protons) |
