| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Atom | The smallest part of an element, has the elements chemical properties |
| Element | One of a class of substances, made of atoms with the same number of protons |
| Molecule | Smallest physical part of an element |
| Compound | A pure substance made of two or more elements |
| Atomic number | The number of protons in the element |
| Mass number | The atomic weight of atom = to the number of neutron and protons |
| Atomic weight | The average weight of an atom of an element |
| valence electron | An electron of an atom in the outermost shell |
| Electron | Has a negative charge |
| Proton | Has a positive charge |
| Neutron | Has a nuetral charge |
| Isotope | Any two or more elements that have the same number of protons, or the same atomic number w/ different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus, or different atomic weights. |
| Radioisotope | A radioactive isotope, usually artificial |
| Electron configuration | The distribution of electrons of an atom or molecule |
| Bond | A chemical lin between two atoms where electron pairs are shared. |
| Polar bond | A bond between two atoms where electrons are shared unequally. |
| Nonpolar bond | A bond where two atoms share electrons. |
| Hydrogen bond | The electromagnetic attraction created between a partially positively charged hydrogen atom attached to a highly electronegative atom and another nearby electronegative atom |
| Solvent | the liquid in which a solute is dissolved to form a solution. |
| Solution | Solution is uniform mixture |
| Solute | Solute is what gets dissolved |
| Hydrophobic | Substance does not have an affinity for water of fear of water |
| Hydrophilic | Substance has an affinity or love of water |
| Amino acid | The structural units (monomers) that make up proteins. |
| Nucleotide | The monomer of a nucleic acids. |
| Peptide bond | A chemical bond formed between two molecules when the carboxyl group of one molecule reacts with the amino group of the other molecule, releasing a molecule of water (H2O). |
| Lipid | Fats |
| Saturated fat | A type of fat that is most often solid at room temperature. |
| Saccharide | Another term for sugar |
| Specific heat (water) | The temperature of water does not change easily |
