Term | Definition |

Ecosystem | all the living and nonliving parts of the environment interacting |
Population | a group of the same species in a given area (example: all the ducks that live near a pond) |
Biotic Factor | anything in the environment that is alive or was one living (ex. a dead tree) |
Abiotic Factor | anything in the environment that is nonliving (ex: air, water, sun) |
Limiting Factor | anything that restricts the number of organisms that can live in an ecosystem (ex: amount of food, water, shelter, predators) |
Interdependence | a relationship where both things depend on or affect one another |
Resource | things in the environment an organism needs to survive (food, air, space, water, mate, etc.) |
Producer | plants: organisms that make their own food through photosynthesis |
Consumer | any organism that has to eat another organism to survive (ex: herbivores, carnivores, omnivores and decomposers) |
Sun | primary source of energy for an ecosystem or food chain or food web |
Food Chain | a model that shows the movement of matter and energy from one organism to another in an ecosystem |
Food Web | a model that shows many different feeding relationships in an ecosystem |
Competition | when organisms struggle for a limited supply of resources in an ecosystem |
decline | means to go down or decrease |
