Roles/Relationship

Vocabulary for Ecology 1 Learning Task 1

TermDefinition
ecosystem all the living organisms living in an area and the abiotic/non living factors they use to stay alive
population 2 or more organisms of the same species
abiotic NOT ALIVE...non-living parts of an ecosystem (examples include: soil, moisture, rock, oxygen, nutrients, sun, water)
biotic ALIVE...living parts of an ecosystem (examples include: tree, bacteria, dog, human, mosquito)
niche the role or job of an organism in the ecosystem (predator, prey, producer, etc.)
predator an organism that eats/kills another organisms
prey an organism that is eaten/killed by another organism
parasite an organism that lives in/on another organism and damages it while using it to survive (lice, flea, tapeworm, etc.)
host the organism that is being damaged by a parasite living in/on it
community All of the living (biotic) organisms living in an area (does NOT include the non-living factors)
